Mike’s Honda CB550: custom seat made from wood…

Although Mike has been working at MotoPreserve for about a year, meticulously chipping away at his 1978 Honda CB550, his secret project has been the custom set, made of Teak wood…

Not many people customize a seat from wood, and the fact that Mike, working on his very first bike, decided to go with this difficult medium, is commendable.  But then we didn’t see if for months.  He has a wood shop across town, and did all the work there, except for the fiberglass seat pan.  So we never saw the progress, and despite being aware that he was working with wood, I don’t think any of us could picture it.

Then one day it’s here.  A gorgeous seat and cafe-style rear hump, made of the tropical hardwood Teak, and so custom it brings a tear to the eye.  We have only seen one other wood seat, on the Cafe Racer TV program, and that was pretty cool.  But having this one made by one of our own, with his own hands, brings pride to the shop.

An ambitious project, completed successfully by a new builder, is always something special.  Although it may not be for everyone, this seat will stand out in a crowd for sure.  You will not see another one like it, not on a Honda CB550, not on ANY bike!  This one is Mike’s, and Mike’s alone.

Kudos sir!  And congratulations on a job well done.  Now, if only we could get those carbs working right…

  1. Great looking seat. That could’ve been a disaster but I’m pleasently surprised (and now jealous!)

    1. I honestly didn’t know what to expect when mike told us he was making a seat and rear “cowl” out of Teak – but he really outdid himself.
