Since completing the wood seat, Mike has been in Carb hell, tweaking away with a little help from the folks at MotoPreserve.  Unfortunately, he has mostly been on his own, with schedules tight, and everyone working on their own projects…

Carb Tuning Woes for the Honda CB550

The issue Mike has encountered, which is common with Honda SOHC builds, is the carb tuning has been ornery and difficult.  When you look to modify a 4-cylinder bike, with pods and aftermarket exhaust, the headache to pleasure ratio gets tough.  4 carbs means tweaking 4 independent units to work together, and they often do NOT want to.  Mike was diligent in doing a ton of research, and finally ordered a few sets of different size jets.  The pods create the biggest challenge, changing the venturi, with air flow completely f%#ked from the stock functionality.  After going back to stock jet sizes (the Previous Owner had installed MUCH bigger jets), it seemed that slight changes to the pilot and main jets should produce the desired tuning.

At this point, there is still a flat, bogging spot at about 1/4 throttle.  With a few changes under his belt already, including messing with the needle position, Mike still has a ways to go.  Hopefully the tuning will work it’s way out soon, so that Mike can get a couple cool rides in before the winter season…
