Husqvarna TE610: Water Damage

The other day while riding home, a friendly and concerned citizen pulled up beside me at a light.  He pointed out that I was operating without a running light.  Appreciative, when I got home I checked it to find that the brake light and turn signals were working fine, but no running light…

The Husqvarna TE610 came with the aftermarket LED tail light on it, so I was unaware of how the rig was wired.  I thought at first there might be a resistor in-line, making the tail light work at a diminished output, and then let the full brightness of the lights shine through when braking.  Once I got it back to the shop, I took the tail light apart – after snipping a ton of zip ties, and removing the years of mud and crud that had built up.  Much to my surprise, this “water-tight” tail light (manufacturer claim) was anything but…

At first I wondered whether I could get some replacement components from Radio Shack, and solder it up myself.  But the more I cleaned it off and dug around, the more damage I discovered.  In the end, I emailed the company.  Despite DRC (a subsidiary of Dirt Freak) being based in Japan, I received a response within 24 hours.  They immediately apologized for the contamination, and asked for my shipping address to replace it, at no cost to me.  That’s some damn good service, proving it never hurts to ask.  All too often we assume that manufacturers will not stand behind their products, but I have found that often companies are looking to please their customers.

Word to the wise: it never hurts to ask.  I have been contacting companies immediately after discovering some type of problem with their product, and have noticed remarkably good results…

  1. They actually sent me a new one from the US distributor – who called personally to make sure he was shipping out the right thing! Gotta love a company who stands up and takes accountability. Now hopefully the next one doesn’t rust the same way… 🙂
