In the beginning, the majority of time spent on the custom Suzuki GS750 rebuild was tearing it down, cleaning, and overhauling the engine.  With an order placed for engine parts, the waiting began, but Christian decided to maximize his time by designing a custom battery box…

With the basic tools of any custom builder; just pencil, ruler and pad, Christian began sketching out what would become the most unique motorcycle battery box we have seen.  The purchase of an Anti-Gravity 8-cell battery dictated the size needed, but the design challenge would be influenced by the seat.

Last year we posted about Mike’s custom seat made from wood, which left a Benji cafe style seat floating around the shop.  Christian decided to use this Benji seat, after cutting it down to fit the Suzuki GS750.  Many builders would place the battery under the rear hump, but that prevents easy access.  So Christian and Jarred came up with an alternate plan.  With the shape and height of the seat offering some space underneath to work with, they settled on a battery “tray” that would live under the front portion of the seat.  But the unique solution to accessibility came with the addition of a trap door.

That’s right, a battery box that James Bond would envy.  While we are not sure whether there will be an oil slick dispenser option, hinges will ensure that the battery can be slid out from the front of the tray.  Christian first got the piece mocked up with cardboard, then set about cutting and grinding the 16 gauge steel to fit.  Some quick tack welds by Jarred, a custom hinge by Danny, and the Suzuki GS750 now has a working trap-door battery box, complete with easy access for charging and swapping batteries…
