Final MotoGP Race: hair raising!

The final race of the 2011 season was held in Spain, and promised to be dramatic, regardless of the outcome.  Despite Casey Stoner already being crowned World Champion, the race had the air of drama due to the unfortunate death of up-and-comer Marco Simoncelli, in the previous race….It’s hard not to focus on the possibility of a crash, when the previous race had such a horrible accident.  There were several riders who were donning tributes to the fallen rider, and the entire mood was one of celebration for the life of a racer who looked to be on the rise toward greatness.  With several of the key riders missing this race, the grid looked bare, but ready to go….

And then, at the first turn, Alvaro Bautista hit the rear wheel of Andrea Dovizioso, causing hm to go down, and take out Rossi, Nicky Hayden and Randy de Puniet. Hayden suffered a broken wrist, but otherwise, the riders were safe.  The crash caused held breath, while it appeared to be similar to the one that had taken Simincelli’s life.  Terrifying.

The rest of the race proceeded, for the most part uneventfully, with Stoner leading by an astounding 10 second gap.  That is, until the final laps when American Ben Spies decided it was his turn, and despite the rain, poured it on, and overtook the leader.  Stoner trailed him closely, and coming out of the final turn, into the straight to finish the race, Stoner pulled some magic out of his World Champion hat and wheelied for the final stretch to beat Spies by a hair.  Incredible.  The man does NOT like to lose…
