A new partnership between Audi and Ducati…

Audi, the largest European auto manufacturer, has begun the process of buying Ducati Motorcycles, through their Volkswagen division,  for an estimated $1.3 billion (USD).  Although the deal is not complete, and still needs approval from regulatory agencies, the deal is likely done.

Many financial insiders see no clear gain from the purchase, and consider the move a “trophy” for the VW Chairman Ferdinand Piech.  In the past couple years, Ducati has seen sales growth of their ‘luxury line’ of bikes.  Last year the Italian brand sold 42,000 motorcycles.  In contrast, Honda sold more than 16 million in the past fiscal year.
