Hogs in the ‘hood: Yamaha XT 600

Yamaha XT 600 dual purpose

This is the first time I have seen a Yamaha XT 600 (or is it a newer XT 660?) in the neighborhood.  There is a growing opinion that despite the increased popularity of dual-sport bikes, most people do not take advantage of the off-road capabilities of these versatile machines…

As time goes by, and I rack up mileage on city streets (sadly, the majority of my riding), I have become convinced that these bikes are purpose-built for traversing our pock-marked metropolis.

The biggest names in this genre are the BMW GS series, the Kawasaki KLR 650, the Suzuki DR series, followed by the Honda XL and the Yamaha XT series.  In the past couple years we have seen more and more of the BMWs littering the streets, but the high price tag puts them out of reach for most consumers.

Enter the Japanese, with their sights set on functionality at an affordable price, and you too could be sucking up potholes like they were insignificant bumps in the road…

  1. Just googled ‘xt600 nyc’ and saw this image. I bought this bike last year. The best bike I own. I’ll send you a pic of what I did with it.
