Despite my interest in traveling on a bike long distances, I have never been able to wrap my head around the Honda Goldwing.  It’s big, comfortable, and full of features most often seen in luxury cars…

Wait.  That actually seems appealing…

Introduced in 1974, the Honda Goldwing was originally a non-fairing, flat 4 cylinder, with a massive displacement engine (999cc) and weighing in at a whopping 590lbs.  This was the most stripped down and bare this model would ever be.  By 2001 the bike came with a flat-six engine displaced at over 1800cc.  The fairings, radios, popcorn makers had been added by this point, and the modern Goldwing had become a staple along the highways of America.  The development and history is intense!

You don’t often see the Honda Goldwing in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.  But running out for coffee the other day, there it was, all shiny white and waiting for long-distance travel.  The most impressive part of these bikes is the dash.  It has as many controls as any car I’ve ever owned (more really!), and seems to be capable of handling all sorts of functions that I never dream of on a bike.

This is a very particular bike, and one that requires leaving the “cool factor” of motorcycles behind, and embracing the concept of open vehicle travel, but in true comfort.  Also, there is clearly no better 2-up seating like the posh Goldwing.

As we all grow older and want to continue to ride our bikes as long as physically possible I think you tend to look toward something that is more comfortable to ride but, I can see myself still wanting the thrills of a fast good handling old bike or a new sport bike or many other kinds of bikes than this. These are not bikes in my opinion and should be treated in a different way. To me it is like saying a Can-Am is a motorbike………..they just are not. At some point someone always goes to far with something and it seems to become ridiculous. If I wanted the comforts of a car I would drive a car not ride something that is half motorbike half car. I Always look at bikes like minimalist art work. There is an entire journey just sitting there waiting without all of the everyday creature comforts. Riding a motorbike is about riding and where it has taken you not about making sure i am comfortable on my way to some silly destination. I watched an 80 yr. old man school everyone at a vintage race one time on an old Matchless and get off the bike in the pit and barely be able to stand up but I took one look at his face and saw the biggest smile and I thought to myself that if I actually live that long I am going to continue to ride a bike like they should be ridden. Just because we get old doesn’t mean we have to stop having fun riding a motorbike. I am not a lazy rider and have no problems enjoying the scenery on a back country road if I want on my 72 XS650 with rear sets and clip-ons and enjoy that fact that if I feel like it I can hunker down, twist the throttle and maybe try to scare myself a little.

    1. Agreed. I can’t see myself on one of these, but then again, I’m not 80 :). You make a good point.. I see this choice as analogous to the choice between Britney Spears or Radiohead. For me, Radiohead is music, and Spears is entertainment. Both have a value, but not for me. the people who are choosing to ride these beasts are looking for something altogether different from the experiences I seek on a bike.

      That’s fine, just vastly different motivations. I’m with you, I like to twist the throttle and go, and this Goldwing doesn’t give the impression that an experience like that is in the cards…
