One of the first bikes we had in the garage was our friend Alex’s Honda Hawk GT.  Also known as the Honda NT650, this bike has developed a cult-like following, with dedicated fans customizing their street bikes, or turning these motorcycles into full-on track bikes…

Having been around several of these bikes over the years, in various forms, we jumped at the opportunity to pick one up cheap.  Our feeling was that we could really dig in and get creative with this build.  This Honda Hawk GT is currently in rough shape, but that’s why you get them cheap, and considering we want to make this a fully customized bike, we are fine with the condition.

The bike will get a complete tear-down, taking it down to the frame, with a nuts and bolts rebuild that addresses any of the safety issues, as well as a chance to modify the bike to fit our vision for it.  Fortunately, there is a very comprehensive and helpful forum for these bikes, which will be great for running ideas past the experts.

Ideally, I would like to see this build go in a different direction than many examples we have seen, which often turn the Honda Hawk GT into a semi-modern looking sport bike.  I would love to embrace the fact that the bike was one of the first ‘naked’ bikes, having been released before even the Ducati Monster.  I’m thinking more supermoto, and less street racer.  But all ideas are still on the table, so we will see how this one turns out.

Stay tuned for many updates…
