Moving is always stressful, but in the back of your mind, you think “once we get there, it will all be over…”  That’s not the case, when you quickly realize that unpacking is almost worse.  When we arrived in our new home, some of the first things out of the truck were the motorcycle helmets.  And what we determined was that we needed a safe place to store them.  The idea was hatched to make my own since none of the options out there seemed ideal…

After messing with a few designs, this is what fits all my helmets best…

While there are plenty of motorcycle helmet racks out there, none of them seemed to suit me.  So I opted for a few hours in the shop, a couple designs for reference, and I hit the metal sheers for some cutting.  The idea was to keep it as simple as possible, to make it easy to recreate, if I happened stumble on a design I actually liked.

After using metal sheers to cut some 16 gauge steel sheet to basic rectangular size, I then went to the vertical band saw to notch it out to what began to look like a common shoe insert.  A couple passes on the bench sander, and the shape was just about perfect, but still flat.

I recently acquired a metal brake, the type that fits into your bench vice.  I have been skeptical about what this thing could handle, but it did a fine job on bending the parts to the correct angle, providing the area that will secure the helmet.

Basically, it’s a flat mounting piece with a “tongue” to hold the helmets, which will stick out from the wall. It became apparent that I would want some type of protective covering for the parts that will touch the helmet.  So off to the hardware store to pick up some Plasti-Dip.  The first attempt was to see if I could brush it on without having to dip the whole thing.  A total failure, and the last piece of the puzzle, to be worked out when I move to the new shop.

My recent interest in wood working seemed to help the project along, when I realized that I could shape a nice piece of wood with the router, to make the wall mount something an interior decorator (or someone more concerned with the house than the garage) could love…

Stay tuned for the final product.
