The 1972 Honda XL250 MotoSport was in desperate need of paint when we got it.  Round and round we went trying to hone in on a good color.  The factory silver is a classic, but we were looking for something a bit more unique…

The body filler work was completed, and it was now time for primer.  The temporary paint booth was rigged up, the paint guns cleaned and prepped.  The only issue was finding a few more problem areas once the primer was on.  The uniform color and texture of the primer made a few areas show some inconsistencies.  Back to the bench for some sanding down to raw metal.  This time we decided to try a new (to us) product that helps avoid missing spots.  Mirka Dry Guide Coat is a powder that gets applied directly to the part that needs body work.  Sanding over the dry coat reveals the high and low spots.  This is a must have for parts with complex lines and shape, making detection of problem areas a breeze.  We will not be doing any future bodywork without it.

We finally decided on a green base paint, close to the classic British Racing Green.  Metalux brand paint was chosen after a recommendation from our local paint supplier.  Although there are some great online paint shops, having dealt with our local supplier on this project we’d rather stick close to home.  The information provided by a face-to-face interaction instead of an online bot is priceless.

The Metalux and clear went on smooth and without issue.  The paint job was almost complete.  Pre-fab decals had been rejected, opting rather for custom stripes.  Fineline tape will used to create the stripes…
