One of the first things decided on for the custom CX500 Scrambler was to get rid of the massive stock dash.  Although we often love what the Honda factory had to offer, their predilection for giant gauges was not going to work on this build…

In order to reduce the overwhelming feel of the front end, we needed a different dash.  Acewell is a company that has been making some slick pieces for custom builds, focused on modern electronics with a vintage feel.  We opted for the 2853 model for both price and style.  It offered both speedo and tach, in a single small round unit.  Using the 2853 on this build required use of a matching speedometer cable, so that the stock speedo gear at the wheel could be retained.  Both cable and speedo were purchased from Dime City Cycles, who have good prices on both these parts.

The issue with a custom dash was that we still wanted to utilize the stock gauge mounting location.  Two bolt holes are part of the stock triple-tree, and we didn’t want to cut these off.  Best to use them as the mounting location – and adapt our design.  The Acewell being so much smaller required raising the mount somehow.  We quickly turned some tall risers on the lathe, and then got to work on the mount design.  Measurements were made of the Acewell mounting holes, which are set on an angle for viewing from the cockpit.  We then designed something in CAD, spit out the g-code, and took it over to the new CNC.  A short while later we had a part in 6061 aluminum for mounting just in front of the bars.
