Vintage Tool: The Millers Falls Power Hacksaw when it first arrived…

We love a great vintage tool. We appreciate the way they were built, the history they contain, and the capabilities they often add to the shop. After years of procrastinating, it’s finally time for this Vintage Power Hacksaw Restoration. We picked up this machine years ago at an auction, when MotoPreserve was in Vermont. It was our very first machine shop auction, and we bid very little for it. It looked as if it had history, and would make a good addition to the shop. Luckily, there were no competitive bids, so we walked away with it for a song…

Vintage Tool: Patent Date: 1893!

This vintage power hacksaw was made by the company Millers Falls Tools, located in Massachusetts. Long since shuttered, they were known for their quality cutting tools, including taps, dies, and most of all – saws. This power hacksaw has an original patent date of 1893, and best guess is that this unit was likely made in the early 1900’s. When we first purchased it, although it had been heavily modified from its original form, the machine was functioning. But it was in rough shape (to say the least!) and in need of a thorough cleaning.

This hacksaw had been set up to run on 3 phase power, so we needed to add a VFD to hook it to our single-phase building power. A cheap Teco VFD was sourced for power, and a simple cleaning got the machine running. It wasn’t perfect – but it did provide us with decent cuts on thick metal stock.

Fast forward five years: we have finally begun the restoration, and if you are anything like us – you love seeing a vintage tool brought back to life. If you’re interested – please follow along with the video series as we get this thing in shape and cutting straight…
